Flowers of Patagonia: what blooms in the steppe and the forest, and when

Spegazzini base 2022 12 1920w

The flowers of southern Patagonia bloom most intensely between late spring and summer, roughly from October to January. Low-lying, wind-resistant plants such as calafate, neneo, and slipper orchid appear on the steppe; in the Andean forest, the intense red of the notro and small orchids like the palomita stand out.

We've been sailing Lake Argentino since 1980, and the flowering season is one of the calendars we've learned to read from the deck: when the slopes are dotted with red, we know the peak season has begun. This article is for those who want to see the landscape from ground level, in addition to admiring the ice.

When do the flowers of Patagonia bloom?

In southern Santa Cruz, spring arrives late and summer is short, so plants take advantage of a brief window of opportunity. The dates vary with altitude, wind exposure, and each season, but the general pattern is this:

  • September and October: New leaves sprout and the first flowers appear, almost always yellow and close to the ground. The calafate is one of the first to bloom.
  • November to January: The time of greatest flowering. The Chilean firebush (Notro) blooms in the forest, the slipper orchid (Lady's slipper) blooms in the steppe, and the orchids of the undergrowth bloom.
  • February and March: There are some late flowers left, like some yellow daisies, and the focus shifts to the fruits, like the berries of the calafate tree.
  • Autumn and winter: There are hardly any flowers; the color is provided by the lenga and ñire trees, which turn red and yellow before losing their leaves.

Steppe flowers: small, low and hardy

The steppe surrounding El Calafate receives little rain and a lot of wind. That's why its flowers are small, grow close to the ground, or are protected within cushion-like clumps, and many have tough leaves, hairs, or thorns to prevent water loss. You have to bend down to see them, and it's worth it.

PlantHow to recognize itApproximate time
Calafate (Berberis microphylla)Thorny shrub with small yellow flowers; later it produces dark blue berriesFlowers in spring, fruit in summer
Neneo (Mulinum spinosum)A rounded, green, and very thorny shrub with tiny yellowish flowersSpring and summer
Little shoe of the Virgin (Calceolaria uniflora)Yellow and orange flower shaped like a small shoe, almost touching the stony groundLate spring and summer
Black bush (Junelia tridens)A dark, compact shrub covered in light, fragrant flowersSpring and summer
Senecios (Senecio)Yellow, daisy-like flowers on grayish clumpsSummer

The calafate berry deserves a separate mention: it gave the town its name and has its own legend. We tell it in the article about the calafate berry, the berry, and the legend.

Flowers of the Patagonian Andean forest

To the west, where the mountain range retains more moisture, the steppe gives way to forests of lenga and ñire trees. There the landscape changes:

  • Notro (Embothrium coccineum): A shrub or small tree covered in tubular red flowers. It's the flower most visible from afar and the one that brightens the hillsides in late spring. Its tubular shape attracts birds and insects seeking nectar.
  • Little dove (Codonorchis lessonii): A small, white orchid grows on the forest floor of the lenga trees. It's inconspicuous: you have to walk slowly and look among the leaf litter.
  • Calafate on the edge of the forest: It also appears where the forest opens up, in clearings and along the banks.

If you are interested in the forest itself, with its trees and color changes, we explain it in Andean Patagonian forest: lengas, ñires and notros.

Where to see flowers on the All Glaciers Navigation

The All Glaciers Navigation crosses both environments in the same day:

  1. The road to Puerto Punta Bandera. The 47 km from El Calafate traverse steppe and lake shore. In spring, the low bushes along the roadside are more colorful than they appear from the vehicle.
  2. The slopes of the northern arm. From the deck, the forest accompanies much of the journey. In full bloom, the red patches of the Chilean firebush stand out against the green of the lenga trees.
  3. The Spegazzini Base. This is the place to see them up close. The path from the pier to the Spegazzini Refuge has interpretive stations, and one of its themes is flora. Walking slowly, watching the edges, is the best way to find the small flowers.

The fact that the park's highest glacier is named after a botanist, Carlos Spegazzini, is a good reminder that science has also studied these plants. We discussed this in our article on the origin of glacier names.

Flowers on the way to El Chaltén

If you take the Viedma Full Day Adventure, the day crosses the steppe along Route 40 and ends with a short hike to the Chorrillo del Salto waterfall in the Andean forest of El Chaltén. It's another great opportunity to compare the steppe wildflowers with those of the forest on the same day. We describe the route along Route 40 in our guide from El Calafate to El Chaltén.

Look without picking: the flowers inside the Park

Within Los Glaciares National Park, the flora is protected. Here are some simple rules we ask you to follow both on board and on land:

  • Do not cut flowers, branches or seeds, even if they seem abundant.
  • Take photos without leaving the path: steppe plants grow very slowly and a single step can break a clump of plants that has been there for years.
  • Do not carry plants or seeds from one place to another.
  • To get a closer look, crouch down next to the path or use your camera's zoom.

Sail in flower season

The flowering season coincides with the daily departures of the All Glaciers Navigation tour, from September to April, between 8:30 a.m. and 16:00 p.m. (from April to August, between 9:30 a.m. and 17:00 p.m.). To see the forest in bloom, aim for late spring and early summer. Check availability and current rates on the All Glaciers Navigation website.

FAQ

When do the flowers of Patagonia bloom?

The peak flowering occurs between late spring and summer, roughly from November to January. Dates vary depending on altitude, wind, and the season.

When does the Chilean firebush bloom?

The Chilean firebush (Notro) blooms in late spring and early summer. During those weeks, its red flowers can be seen from the boat on the shores of Lake Argentino.

Is it possible to collect flowers in Los Glaciares National Park?

No. The park's flora is protected: flowers, branches, and seeds cannot be cut. They can be photographed from the trails.

Are there orchids in Patagonia?

Yes. On the floor of the lenga forest grows the palomita, a small, white orchid that blooms in spring and can be seen walking slowly along the paths.
