Chaltén in winter: what it's like to sail to the Viedma Glacier

El Chaltén in winter is a completely different destination: fewer people, snow-capped mountains, short days, and a silence that doesn't exist in summer. The Viedma Adventure departs daily from September to April and every other day plus Saturdays from May to August, so even in the off-season you can sail on Lake Viedma, hike to the Iceberg Bay viewpoint, and reach the front of the Viedma Glacier.

We've been navigating the lakes of Los Glaciares National Park since 1980, and one of the things we love to share is that winter doesn't close Patagonia: it transforms it. This guide is for those planning a trip between May and September who want to know what to expect.

What is El Chaltén like in winter?

El Chaltén is the National Capital of Trekking, and in summer it comes alive with hikers from all over the world. In winter, the town slows down: there's much less activity, many activities are reduced, and the landscape turns white and blue.

  • Snowy mountains: Fitz Roy and the hills surrounding the town are covered in snow, creating a very photogenic contrast.
  • Short days: There are few hours of daylight, so it's best to organize your day around them.
  • Cold: Temperatures are low and it may snow in the town and on the road.
  • Be quiet: Few visitors on the trails and at the lake.

If you plan to hike on your own, check the trail conditions at the National Park visitor center beforehand: with snow or ice, some sections change completely.

Viedma Adventure in the off-season

The Viedma Adventure is a 4-hour boat trip departing from Puerto Bahía Túnel, 18 km from El Chaltén. The route is the same in winter and summer.

  1. Sailing on the waters of Lake Viedma, skirting the southern shore, with views of the Huemul Massif.
  2. After 40 minutes, disembark at Cape Horn Bay and take an easy walk to a viewpoint overlooking Iceberg Bay, with the Andes Mountains in the background.
  3. Return to the boat and approach to the front of the Viedma Glacier, with the guide's interpretation.
  4. Ice fishing: a toast with ancient ice from the glacier.
  5. Snack on board included: premium sandwich of your choice, mineral water and brownie made in El Chaltén.

From May to August, tours depart every other day plus Saturdays, from 10:30 AM to 14:30 PM; from September to April, they depart daily. Check the departure schedule and current rates on the tour page before planning your itinerary.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The Patagonian winter brings cold, snow, and sometimes wind. Our policy is the same in all seasons: sailing is not suspended due to bad weather; in the event of an extraordinary weather event, the situation is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The crews know the lake in all its seasons, and the boat offers shelter from the cold between trips on deck.

What to wear to El Chaltén in winter

The secret is the layering system, with some winter reinforcements:

  • First thermal layer (T-shirt and leggings).
  • Intermediate fleece or down coat.
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket.
  • Hat, neck warmer or scarf and gloves: on deck, facing the glacier, they are appreciated.
  • Waterproof footwear with good soles for walking in Cape Horn Bay.
  • Sunglasses: snow and water reflect a lot of light.

We have a complete guide on what clothes to wear to glaciers depending on the season.
