A good 3-day El Chaltén itinerary combines a first day of short walks to acclimatize, a long day towards Laguna de los Tres or Laguna Torre, chosen according to the forecast, and a day of sailing to the Viedma Glacier with the Viedma Adventure, from 10:30 to 14:30, which allows you to rest your legs and adds ice to the trip.
We sail across Lake Viedma from Puerto Bahía Túnel, 18 km from the town, and see how trips to El Chaltén are organized every day. The most successful ones have two things in common: a well-chosen long trail and a flexible plan for the weather.
Chaltén in 3 days: the itinerary at a glance
| Daytime | Morning | Afternoon |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival and walk through the village | Condor Lookout and Waterfall |
| Day 2 | Full-day trail: Laguna de los Tres or Laguna Torre | |
| Day 3 | Viedma Adventure, from 10:30 to 14:30 | Free afternoon or short walk |
The order of days 2 and 3 can be reversed depending on the forecast. Below we explain how to decide.
Day 1: Arrival and short walks
If you're coming from El Calafate, the drive along Route 40 and the road that skirts Lake Viedma is already part of the journey: with clear skies, Fitz Roy appears directly ahead before you even enter the town. We describe it in our guide from El Calafate to El Chaltén via Route 40.
In the afternoon, two short walks starting from the same village are useful for acclimatization:
- Condor Lookout: a short climb with a wide view of the village, the valley and, if it is clear, Fitz Roy.
- Chorrillo del Salto: A walk through the Andean forest to a waterfall. Details at Chorrillo del Salto.
Before heading out on the trails, stop by the National Park Visitor Center at the entrance to the town: there you can find information on trail conditions and recommendations for the day.
Day 2: The Long Trail
It's the big day. There are two classics, and it's best to choose just one:
- Laguna de los Tres: The hike to the foot of Fitz Roy. The final stretch is steep and requires good physical condition. All about the mountain at Fitz Roy Hill.
- Laguna Torre: a route with less elevation change that ends in front of the lagoon and Cerro Torre.
Leave early, bring water, food, warm clothing and a windbreaker, and respect the return times recommended by the park rangers. These are full-day hikes: don't combine them with any other activity that day.
Day 3: Sailing to the Viedma Glacier
After the long trail, the Viedma Adventure is the ideal plan for the last day. It's a 4-hour trip from Puerto Bahía Túnel.
- Sailing along the southern coast of Lake Viedma with views of the Huemul Massif.
- At 40 minutes, disembarkation at Cape Horn Bay and easy walk to a viewpoint overlooking Iceberg Bay.
- Approach to the face of the Viedma Glacier, the largest in Los Glaciares National Park, with interpretation by the guide.
- Ice fishing: a toast with ancient ice from the glacier.
- Snack on board included: premium sandwich of your choice, mineral water and brownie made in El Chaltén.
Since it ends at 14:30 PM, the afternoon is free to rest or continue your journey. We explain why sailing works so well as a break between hikes in El Chaltén: Trekking and Sailing.
How to rearrange days according to the weather
In El Chaltén, the forecast is king. The rule of thumb is to reserve the day with the best skies for the long hike, because the real charm of Laguna de los Tres lies in seeing Fitz Roy clear. If the summit is shrouded in mist on the second day, change your plans: do the boat trip that day and leave the hike for the third.
Navigation is more flexible in the face of the weather: the glacier and icebergs look just as good even with clouds, and often the blues of the ice are more striking under overcast skies. Navigation is not suspended due to bad weather; in the event of an extraordinary weather event, the situation is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
What to have sorted out before arriving
- Viedma Adventure Reserve with a tentative date; if you change the day later, the change is subject to availability and the current cancellation policy.
- Entrance to the National Park: Navigation is required and not included; it can be purchased online at pnlosglaciares.ar.
- Transfer to Tunnel Bay: You can arrange your own transportation or use the optional transfer service, which departs from and returns to our offices in El Chaltén. Learn more at Port Bay Tunnel.
- Layered clothing and comfortable shoes for trails and deck.

FAQ
Are 3 days enough to explore El Chaltén?
Yes, for the essentials: short hikes, a long trail to Fitz Roy or Cerro Torre, and a boat trip to the Viedma Glacier. With more days, you can add a second long hike.
What day is best to do the Viedma Adventure?
After the most demanding trail or on a cloudy day, Fitz Roy, as the glacier looks the same from the lake even with overcast skies.
Is the Viedma Adventure physically demanding?
No. It includes a single short, easy hike to the Iceberg Bay viewpoint; the rest of the time is spent sailing.
Is it possible to visit Laguna de los Tres and go boating on the same day?
It's not recommended. The Laguna de los Tres hike takes a full day, and the boat trip takes from 10:30 to 14:30; it's best to do them on separate days.
