Cerro Castillo Full Day: sailing, 4x4 and the Condor Lookout

MG

The Cerro Castillo Full Day tour is an 8-hour excursion, from 9:00 AM to 17:00 PM, departing from Puerto Punta Bandera. It sails across Lake Argentino to the Cerro Castillo ranch and then ascends in a 4x4 vehicle between Mount Castillo and Mount Hobler to the Condor Lookout. The tour also includes an easy hike to Juliet Waterfall, a Patagonian lunch at a mountain refuge, and the return trip by boat. No entrance fee to the National Park is required.

The excursion is operated by Fun Patagonia, Solo Patagonia's travel agency, and departs from the same port from which we have sailed to the glaciers since 1980. It is the natural complement to our sailing trips: another day on the lake, with more time on land.

What is the Cerro Castillo Full Day

It's a full-day excursion that combines three ways to explore the landscape: boat, 4x4 vehicle, and hiking. Unlike glacier cruises, where the ice is the main attraction, here the focus is on the Patagonian mountains surrounding Lake Argentino: hills, forests, mallines (wetland areas), and expansive views from the heights.

The tour departs daily at 9:00 AM and returns at 17:00 PM. The meeting point is Puerto Punta Bandera, 47 km from El Calafate. Transportation from town is optional: you can arrange your own transportation or add it when booking. As the tour does not enter the glacier area of the National Park, you do not need to purchase a park entrance fee.

Updated details, availability, and rates for your date are on the Cerro Castillo Full Day page at Fun Patagonia.

How the day unfolds, step by step

  1. Departure from Punta Bandera (9:00). You embark at the port and sail across Lake Argentino to the Cerro Castillo ranch.
  2. Ascent in 4x4. From the ranch, the journey continues in 4x4 vehicles along mountain tracks that climb between the Castillo and Hobler hills.
  3. Hike to Juliet Waterfall. An easy trail winds through forests and wetlands to the waterfall.
  4. Patagonian lunch. The meal is served in a mountain refuge, with time to rest before continuing.
  5. Condor Lookout. The most panoramic viewpoint of the day, with an open view over the lake and the mountain range.
  6. I return by sailing (17:00). You return by boat to Punta Bandera.

A helpful clarification: this Condor Lookout is located in the Cerro Castillo area, overlooking Lake Argentino. It is not the lookout of the same name in El Chaltén. If you're interested in learning how to identify the bird and the conditions under which it can be seen flying, we have an article about the Andean condor in Patagonia . As with all wildlife sightings, visibility depends on the day.

Who is this excursion for?

The Cerro Castillo Full Day tour works very well for these profiles:

  • Those who have already sailed to the glaciers and they want another day at the lake with a different landscape.
  • Travelers seeking moderate activity: There is a walk, but it is of low difficulty, without demanding inclines.
  • Families and groups of friends who prefer a varied day, with boat, van, forest and lunch included in the tour.
  • Those who stay three days or more in El Calafate and they have a day off after the main sailing trips.

If you have any questions about reduced mobility or special needs, please ask before booking: the tour includes sections in 4x4 on mountain tracks and a walk along a natural trail.

What to bring to Cerro Castillo Full Day

The day combines lake, altitude, and forest, so the weather can change several times between morning and afternoon. Here's what we recommend:

  • Layered clothing: thermal base layer, mid-layer, and windproof and waterproof jacket.
  • Comfortable shoes with good soles are recommended for the trail to Juliet Waterfall; there may be mud in the wetlands.
  • Hat, light gloves and sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen, even when it's cloudy.
  • Water bottle and some snacks for the morning.
  • Camera or cell phone with a charged battery, and an external battery if you take a lot of photos.

To properly layer your clothing according to the time of year, check out our guide on what clothes to bring to El Calafate and the glaciers : the criteria are the same.

How to combine it with All Glaciers

The Cerro Castillo Full Day tour and the All Glaciers boat trip depart from the same port, Punta Bandera, but they are two full-day excursions, so they are done on different days. The most practical option is to combine them into two consecutive days: one day for the Upsala, Spegazzini, Seco, Heim, and Peineta glaciers, and another for Cerro Castillo mountain. You simply return to the port and you'll already be familiar with the logistics.
