Is it possible to see El Calafate in a day? Yes, if you dedicate that day to the glaciers. With just one full day, the most rewarding option is the All Glaciers Navigation: 7 hours sailing on Lake Argentino, five glaciers in view, and a landing at Spegazzini Base. With the transfer, the day takes around 10 hours.
We've been sailing these waters since 1980, and every season we welcome passengers who arrive with just enough time: a stopover between El Chaltén and Ushuaia, a business trip with a free day, a tour of Patagonia with a tight schedule. This guide is for them.
El Calafate in a day: the golden rule is to arrive the night before
The All Glaciares tour departs from Puerto Punta Bandera, 47 km from the town, with departure times from 8:30 AM to 16:00 PM (from April to August, the schedule is delayed by one hour, from 9:30 AM to 17:00 PM). This means the day starts early. If you arrive in El Calafate that same morning, you most likely won't make it to the ferry.
That's why, when someone tells us "I only have one day," the first thing we ask is what time they arrive and what time they leave. This approach works best:
- Arrival day (afternoon or evening): settle in, have a light dinner and get your coat ready.
- Complete day: All Glaciers Navigation, from end to end.
- The following morning: Departure towards your next destination, or a short walk around the town if the schedule allows.
In other words, "a day in El Calafate" usually means two nights in practice. If you have a little more time, we've put together a three-day El Calafate long weekend plan with more space.
Why Todo Glaciares is the best choice for a short stopover
With only one day, it's best to choose an excursion that offers the most scenery without you having to worry about logistics on your own. The "All Glaciers" tour offers that in a single outing:
- Five glaciers: Upsala, Seco, Heim, Peineta and Spegazzini.
- The North Arm of Lake Argentino: The Devil's Mouth and the ice field in front of Upsala, one of the largest glaciers in South America, with 765 km².
- Solid ground versus ice: Landing at Spegazzini Base, with trails, 350m walkways to the De Agostini Viewpoint and a new viewpoint, higher and closer to the glacier.
- Meal sorted: Onboard cafeteria and, as optional extras, the Refuge Menu or the Captain's Club.
- Optional transfer: Round-trip transfer between your hotel in El Calafate and Punta Bandera, without driving or looking for parking.
If it's your first time, what can you see on the All Glaciers Navigation tour? We'll review the glacier itinerary glacier by glacier.

What to get sorted out before arriving
With limited time, there's no room for last-minute arrangements. Before traveling, it's best to have these things sorted out:
- The reservation: In high season the places are full. Check How far in advance should I book Todo Glaciares?.
- The correct date: From September to April there are daily departures; from May to August, every other day. If your only day falls in winter, check the departure schedule before purchasing your ticket.
- The entrance to the Park: It is not included in the tour. You can buy it online at pnlosglaciares.ar and keep the receipt on your phone.
- The transfer: If you don't have a car, add it when you book. It saves you from depending on others first thing in the morning.
- The coat: Windproof jacket, mid-layer, hat, and gloves. On deck, facing the ice, it's cold even in summer.
And if I have some free time in the village
Returning from your boat trip, there's still plenty of daylight in spring and summer. You don't need to plan much: a short walk along the waterfront of Bahía Redonda is enough to see Lake Argentino from the shore, the same lake you sailed on that morning. If you arrived early the day before, the Laguna Nimez Reserve is just a few blocks from the town center and makes a great acclimatization outing.
We don't recommend adding another excursion on the same day as your sailing trip: it's about 10 hours outside of town, and rushing through the afternoon defeats the purpose of the morning. For more relaxed ideas, check out what to do in El Calafate in the afternoon, after your sailing trip.
A day well spent
A short stopover doesn't have to mean a half-hearted visit. With a night's reservation, your park entrance ticket in hand, and all you need to do in a single day, you can see five glaciers, walk in front of the Spegazzini Glacier, and return with a true understanding of Los Glaciares National Park. Check availability and current rates on the Todo Glaciares Navigation website.
FAQ
Is one day enough to explore El Calafate?
It's enough for the main attractions if you dedicate that day to sailing. With the All Glaciers Navigation tour, you'll see five glaciers and disembark at Spegazzini Base in a single day of about 10 hours, including transfers.
Can I do the entire Glaciers tour on the same day I arrive?
It's very difficult: the opening hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. (from April to August, from 9:30 a.m. to 17:00 p.m.) and the port is 47 km from the town. It's advisable to arrive the night before.
Does the Glaciers program come out every day?
From September to April there are daily departures. From May to August, departures are every other day, so it's advisable to check the departure schedule before setting your travel date.
Is the entrance to the National Park included?
No. It is purchased separately, online at pnlosglaciares.ar or at the National Parks offices at the Puerto Punta Bandera terminal.
